History of May is Bike Month

May is Bike Month was started by the League of American Cyclists in 1956 to encourage cycling and promote its many benefits.

The City of Eugene has began hosting May is Bike Month events since 2016, marketed as “We Bike Eugene”, until 2018, when it was expanded to include Springfield, and beyond. In 2022, the Lane Council of Governments took over a primary organizational role, supporting the City of Eugene, City of Springfield, nonprofits, and clubs in their efforts to spread the joy of cycling throughout Lane County. 2023 is the 8th year of celebrations in Lane County!
