Events for New Riders

New to bicycles? Or, has it been awhile since you last rode? Fear not, we have a variety of events just for the new (or rusty) rider!

    Location: Hilyard Community Center, 2580 Hilyard St

    Adaptive Recreation provides a variety of adaptive bikes including trikes, tandems, and hand cycles. During the month of May, free rentals are available after initial fitting or assessment for $5. Free rental is available for same-day rentals only, 30 minutes to full day (9am - 5pm, Mon - Fri). Standard rates apply for multi-day rentals. Not available on Monday, May 29 due to the holiday.

    May is Bike Month – so get your bike ready to ride! Start the month off right by heading down to Oakshire Public House, Wednesday May 1, from 5-7 pm, for a night of socializing and fun!

    Stop by the Bike Month table to grab your food and drink coupons, a free Bike Month t-shirt, and learn about upcoming events. Once you’ve grabbed your drink – socialize, join the all-ages egg hunt for prizes, or visit the bike Shift Community Cycles bike repair pop-up.

    Location: Miller Park (1651 18th St. Florence, OR)

    Dust off your bike and get geared up for May is Bike Month in Florence! We will be offering minor bike repairs and bicycle safety checks for community members. You can pick up a free helmet, bike lights, and other fun items as well. Hope to see you and your bike at Miller Park!

  • Date: Sunday, May 5

    Time: 12:30-3 PM

    Location: 2715 Leo Harris Parkway, Eugene, OR

    All ages are welcome to participate in this race event at Emerald Valley BMX - even striders!

    There will be loaner bikes and helmets available, and new riders race for FREE. There will be an hour of registration and practice before races begin. Staff will be available to help new riders. The more the better!

    There will be raffle prizes and food on site. $5 will be donated for every rider registered to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. USABMX is one of the top fundraisers for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and tracks all over the USA and Canada hold RFL events annually.

    Please join us for this cause and experience the fun that racing BMX has to offer.

    Location: Co-Motion Cycles (4765 Pacific Ave, Eugene, OR)

    Bring your special someone, child, spouse or biking pal and try a tandem at Co-Motion Cycles. Have you wondered what it's like to ride a tandem, but never had a chance to try? This event is just for you. We'll have demo tandems to try, for anyone who is curious about riding a bicycle build for two: a tandem. Double your horsepower and ride together with us!

    We'll have some refreshments, and we'll give a presentation on how to ride a tandem, plus we'll have some experienced tandem riders on hand to help you get to know what tandem riding is all about. Helmets required. Smiles strongly encouraged.

    Location: 2235 Adams St., Eugene

    Bring your bike and your bike lock down to the ToolBox Project for a how to lock your bike event! We’ll demonstrate the best ways to lock your bike and have various lock styles to explore. We’ll also have information on registering your bike with Bike Index or Project 529 to keep it safe!

    We’ll have engravers on-hand so you can engrave your government-issued ID or phone number your bike.

    *Free, new cyclists, returning riders, everyday riders; all are welcome.

    Location: Cresswell Pump Track, Cresswell, OR

    Do you identify as WTFNB and have always been curious or wanted to try out riding on the dirt, trails, or a pumptrack? Curious about the different types of mountain bikes? (It can be overwhelming!) Meet the Dirt Maiden's at the Creswell Pump Track to learn the basics of riding on uneven surfaces, braking, standing up, pumping, and cornering so you can get comfy before hitting the trails!

    This is aimed at BEGINNERS. Never rode a mountain bike before? Only rode a couple times and want to build confidence? This is the space for you!!

    Intended for adults, but kids are welcome.

    Location: Shift Community Cycles

    Join Erin* and Lucy at Shift Community Cycles for birds and bike-themed All-Levels Yoga class! This free, 1-hour class is open to all, including teens/youth and yoga beginners.

    Celebrate Mother's Day with a grounding and accessible class centered on bird-themed poses (asanas) and balance practice to improve your cycling posture and quiet your mind. And stay for some tea and conversation after class, if you like!

    Wear comfortable, fairly form-fitting clothes and be prepared to take off shoes and socks.

    Bring a mat + 2 blocks if you have them; we'll have loaner gear to borrow as well!

    Location: Springfield Library

    Ready to increase your “biking in the street” knowledge? This fun and interactive Teen Library event focuses on rules of the road - including how to signal turns, where to ride in the lane, how to share the street safely with other users, and general street biking tips. Come test your knowledge and meet other Springfield-Eugene teens!

    Free event. Teens only.

    Location: Starts at Springfield Justice Center (right across from Public House)

    Did you hear PeaceHealth Rides bike share expanded into Downtown Springfield? Join this social bike ride to learn more about bike share, get a chance to ride a bike share bike, and meet other community members! The ride will be social-paced, making a six-mile loop along the flat Riverbank Path from Plank Town to Alton Baker Park and back. Come out and explore bike share and stay for drinks afterwards at Public House!

    *Free event (drinks separate). Bike Ride - ages 16 and up.

    Join City of Eugene Waste Prevention for a free Fix-It Fair focused on bikes, skateboards, inline skates, and outdoor gear!

    Bring your broken gear and get help fixing items from local fix-it experts. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get your wheels rolling smoothly for summer!

    Come one, come all on a family-friendly group bike ride to the Filmed by Bike Film Festival on Saturday, May 18!

    The ride begins at Monroe Park, has a pickup location in Amazon Park, and ends at Straub Theater in time for the festival. Once at Straub Theater, there will be a free Shift Community Cycles repair pop up, free Cascadia Mobility bike valet, and free pizza available! View the route here.

    Don't forget to purchase your ticket for the Filmed By Bike Film Festival after the ride.

    Location: Straub Hall, University of Oregon

    Curated short films about bicycles and the outdoors, the Filmed by Bike Film Festival is coming to Eugene! UO and community partners are excited to show 1.5 hours of films and screen the winners of our local film contest. We will have free food, a group ride to the event, as well as bike valet and on-site bike repair services for your convenience. The event is also a fundraiser: all entry ticket and raffle ticket sales will go to Shift Community Cycles. Come join us for an inspiring night of bicycle films and information about local bike activities and groups here in our community.

    Transportation providers and community leaders will offer a variety of fun and educational activities related to walking, biking, riding the bus, shared mobility, and more. Test rides, fittings, workshops, guest presentations, student work showcases, art installations, a scavenger hunt, prizes, music, food, and more transportation-themed offerings.

    Presented by Better Eugene-Springfield Transportation (BEST), AARP Oregon, and LiveMove at the University of Oregon.

    Location: UO Outdoor Program in the Erb Memorial Union

    Join the UO Outdoor Program as UO alumna and author Heidi Beierle takes center stage to share insights into her memoir, Heidi Across America. A gritty story of how opening your heart to others enables you to open your heart to yourself, Heidi’s story is a depiction of homecoming to self and nation.

    As a student at the UO the summer of 2010 when she pedaled solo across the country to study bicycle tourism and rural economic development. This memoir captures the transformative personal journey Heidi experienced during her ride and offers insight about getting unstuck in life, learning to love the remarkable person you are, and finding space in your heart for America. Free and open to all, UO students and community members.
